Wat-Srisuphan -- The Silver Temple
We moved to the Wualai district just south of the Chiang Mai mote. It’s the Silver Smith district. There are lots of shops selling silver bowls, jewelry and wall hangings. Out of nearly every house you can hear someone “tinking” away on a creation. The Wat Srisuphan is just three blocks from our house. It was first built in 1502 but has since been re built. The Wat is covered in silver. Monks come to learn how to work silver and study Buddhism. I met one monk who was studying business at the university and silver smithing at the monastery. He had been working on a door arch for the last year. It was amazing to see the figures emerge from metal. He said one of his arms was already bigger than the other from so much hammering.
